Path to Sonchaux

The path to Sonchaux is a popular route for hundreds of hikers who enjoy the exceptional landscape, which is listed in the Swiss Federal Landscape Inventory (IFP). It is also a favourite with runners, who have been taking part in the famous Montreux - Les Rochers-de-Naye race since 1981. This path is used by the Via Alpina, a national hiking route. Above all, it is the only access that allows cattle to summer on the Rochers-de-Naye mountain pastures every year.

This path, with its dry stone retaining walls and remarkable set of wooden and metal fences, was laid out in 1916 - 1917 by the commune of Veytaux, which owned the mountain pastures. The communes of Veytaux and Villeneuve maintain the path, but snow and bad weather have caused some of the iron pillars to bend and the wooden planks to rot, making the path dangerous for cattle. Renovation was therefore necessary to make the stretch of path between Creux à la Cierge and Sautodoz safer.

The damaged barriers were removed before new ones were installed, made of untreated larch wood or iron, depending on the original design. Some of the metal parts are removable, allowing the barrier to be dismantled in autumn in sections where snow slides are likely to cause damage. The retaining wall just before reaching the Rochers-de-Naye has also been restored.

The Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut Regional Nature Park carried out this restoration project in 2016, for the benefit of the mountain pasture train and the many walkers who use this path. The work was carried out by the forestry team from the communes of Villeneuve and Veytaux, with contractors and the help of the alpine pasture operator Edouard Cosandey and his workers.
